Cobh Golf Club had cause for triple-celebrations last weekend, as their Junior Foursomes Boys Team have just won the Munster Final of this important competition, and the Club also celebrated the Bronce Medal of Clodagh Kilcullen that she won with her Womens Football Team at the Special Olympics. To make it all a real great occasion, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, and the Mayor of Cobh, Jim Quinlan were opening the new preliminary clubhouse premises of Cobh Golf Club which were almost entirely built by volunteers, and gave great praise and encouragement to both, the sportlers and the Club for continued success. It all happened over the weekend 16/17 July, when the Club President (Noreen Kelly) was presenting her Prize to all members.
Both, the Minister and the Mayor praised the achievements, the great spirit and the team efforts that contributed so much to the recent success of the Club. It was a joyful and relaxed atmosphere, and guests and the many club members all enjoyed the talks, stories and of course the speeches of the Minister and Mayor. The great community spirit in the Club and the outstanding work in the Junior Section were emphasised, as so much has in the past three years achieved with the determined and joint efforts of the committed members.
The Junior Foursomes Competition started on April 29 in Muskerry where a total of 13 teams took part in a Stroke Play Regional Qualifier. Youghal and Cobh qualified as the two top teams. Youghal then played Cobh in the Match Play Regional final in East Cork on the 29th of May. Cobh beat Youghal and progressed to the Munster Finals in Nenagh. In the Munster Semi-final, Cobh beat Castletroy by 1 Hole, and then beat Faithleg in the final by 5 Holes.Team members were Gavin Lynch (Team Captain), Jamie Moynihan,Graham O’Connor and David Meaney (Jnr). Subs and playing members in past heats were Michael Meaney (Jnr), Jack Ronan, Liam Laffan, Ian Aherne and Luke Wallace. Our photo also shows Team Manager Tim McCormack and Coaching Co-ordinator Tony Hughes. The team will now advance to compete in the All-Ireland Finals in Galway on the 22nd August.
The Club’s new 18 hole Championship Golf Course is in fabulous condition and continues to contribute to a string of highly respectable results of the Club in regional and national competitions, particularly in the strong Juvenile Section. Great work has also been done here by the Club’s Pro David O’Sullivan, who had travelled together with strong member support to Nenagh to see their team win.
With the new premises of the Club offering good space for great “apres-golf” atmosphere with tea, coffee and light food (on this occasion a full menu was offered by Bramley Lodge), the Club hopes to welcome back the Minister and the Mayor in not too far future, for the opening of the planned final Clubhouse. ”
