Sherlock & Rasmussen announce new building project for Cobh
Minister Seán Sherlock and Cllr Cathal Rasmussen have announced that Cobh Community School’s major new project will go to construction in 2018, as part of the Government’s new 6 Year School Building Programme.
“This Government has prioirtised school building since it took office in 2011,” said Minister Sherlock a former Minister in the Department of Education.
“We committed to replacing prefabs and crumbling buildings that had stood for so long, and we are achieving that. This new Six Year programme is the next step in that commitment. I’m delighted that Cobh Community College is included in that next step and I look forward to the process getting underway as soon as possible for the college.”
“These projects will have a positive knock-on effect for the local economy also, with construction jobs created and further trickle down benefits to local shops and business suppliers.”
Cllr Cathal Rasmussen welcomed the news, stressing the importance that building projects can have on the Cobh economy.
“Despite the obvious financial challenges of the last few years, Labour in Government have delivered the largest ever school investment programme in the history of the State, and I am pleased that our Great Island is benefitting in a significant way from that,” said Cllr Rasmussen.
“The next steps in the process will include design and tendering and I look forward to tracking this project along with the entire school community. These decisions are underpinned by demographic data, ensuring that the best and right decisions are now being made in the interests of our community.”
Minister Sherlock also highlighted the social impact that the school building programme will have.
“We have secured the economic recovery from the depths of 2011,” said the Minister.
“Labour is working on securing the social recovery, and enhancing a school community is a main part of that recovery in our community.”
