Sonia O’Sullivan Statue – appeal to clubs and organisations

ct3Cobh Tourism is delighted to lead a project that will see Cobh’s most famous daughter, Sonia O’Sullivan eternally honoured in her home town with a life size bronze statue.

This statue will convey the immense sense of pride that Cobh people have for this amazing Cobhite. However €33,000 needs to be raised before August 2015 when it is hoped to unveil the statue on the 20th anniversary of Sonia winning a gold medal in the 5000m at the World Athletics Championships. To date €6000 has been raised and sculptor James McLoughlin has commenced work.

Cobh Tourism needs the assistance of everybody in Cobh to raise the balance of the money and we are appealing to all groups, clubs, schools and organisations to organise a fundraising event, include a fundraising element in another event or function that they are organising or to make a contribution to help us to raise the necessary funds.

In this way we can all be proud of “our” statue, a happy statue that will remind us of a decade of hope, triumphs, trials and tribulations as we watched Sonia compete on the world stage.
