Springfield Ramblers (1) v Corintian Boys (2)

Goal Scorers, Killian O’Connell

Opening game of the season kicked off with a tough home defeat. Springfield were on top for most of the first half and with 20mins gone took a deserved lead after a good run from Josh Kelly who fed the ball to Marc Jones who crossed for Killian O’Connell to score. However after being on top for over 45mins Springfield could not turn the hard work into goals. Corinthians came into the game more and more and after some pressure equalised through an OG. Although both teams had chances it was Corinthians who took the lead after Springfield failed to clear a free kick. A hard defeat but the team showed plenty of good organisation and discipline at this early stage of the season to indicate better days to come. Great performances by Shane Kelsal and Sean Butler and best on the night Josh Kelly.

Passage United (2) v Springfield Ramblers (2) Fresh from their pre-season warmup game at Cork City last Friday, the crazy gang opened up their U12 league campaign with a local derby away to Passage.

Jake ‘Cech’ Kennedy gave an exhibition in his first game in goal. The back four of Darragh Ozil Regan, Conor ‘Yaya’ McNamara, Max ‘Gladiator’ Devlin and Luke ‘Modric’ Ahern had everything well under control. Midfield dynamos Josh Griffiniesta, Sam ‘Nasri’ Kennedy and Charlie ‘CR7’ Regan were everywhere and forwards Eoin ‘Keano’ Curry, Ben’ando Torres Kennedy’ and Fionn ‘The Showman’ Dolan caused endless problems for the hosts.

We started well and were very unlucky not to lead having carved out many good chances. A goal for the hosts against the run of play surprised everyone but not as much as the second. So two down after 25 minutes, lesser teams would have wilted. But not these men. And a goal by sensational Summer signing Conor ‘Yaya’ McNamara before half time got us back on track. As part of our FIFA fair play commitments, on came Brian ‘Dynamo’ Dwyer and Daniel ‘Agger’ O’Sullivan at half time to add even more talent to proceedings.

The second half saw Passage lay siege on our goal at times, but confidence spread throughout the team the longer the game went on as they decided as a group not to yield. And they got the minimum they deserved with a last minute goal when Ben ‘ando Torres’ Kennedy drove forward, shrugging off a couple of tough tackles and then showing great composure in lifting the ball over the keeper to finish. Great celebrations broke out on the sideline with coffee and children thrown high in the air. There were rumours the lads were heavily backed in Paddy Powers and it would appear to be true. The Sorrentos sponsored man of the match today was Yaya McNamara and he was presented with his Tiki Taco Fries by captain Torres. So a great start to the season. Arsenal youths may come calling for more of our players, in addition to those already moved to London, if this formcontinues.

Lakewood (1) v Springfield Ramblers (1)
The second game of the week was on a warm Sunday morning away to Lakewood. Playing with a stiff breeze Springfield were the slightly better team in a very close first half. Springfield created the more chances but failed to take them. The second half started with Lakewood using the breeze to their favour and putting more pressure on the Springfield defence. With less than 5mins gone Lakewood broke down the left and for the only time in the game Springfield defence were slow to react. The ball was crossed and after a failed attempt to clear the ball was bundled into the net. Lakewood gained some momentum after that but a solid defence gave them few chances.

Springfield broke on the counter attack several times but like the first half failed to take the chances. With the game heading into the last minute Springfield had a throw on the left the ball was played across the pitch when Sean Butler played a pass into Marc Jones’s feet, Marc took the ball under control but before he could shoot was taken down in the box for a penalty. Rhys Welham came up from defence to coolly slot past the keeper. Lakewood had one last corner but Niall Moynihan came to take the ball superbly and end any further Lakewood hopes of snatching the win. Excellent displays all round especially in defence. Best on the day after being a tower at the back and taking a penalty with great skill was Rhys Welham.

Springfield Ramblers 5 Avondale 1
Ramblers played brilliantly and got off to a great start with a goal by Eoin Cullimore from a superb cross by Peter Ziga after 15mins. This was followed by two more great goals by Jake Ryan leading into half time. Avondale made 4 substitutions, and were rewarded with an early second half goal from a long range free kick. However Ramblers kept attacking and the game was finished off by two more superb goals by J Ryan. This was great team performance with everyone playing their part.
