Stanton Welcomes €100,000 Funding for Cobh Titanic Festival

Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has welcomed today’s announcement that the Titanic 100 festival in Cobh is to be allocated €100,000 in funding from Failte Ireland.

”I am very pleased to see such a big funding allocation, one of the largest amounts of today’s announcement, for the Titanic 100 project. Titanic 100 was established to organise and co-ordinate he wide range of activities that will take place in Cobh and the surrounding area this year to mark the centenary of the Titanic.

”I have been happy to have been in a position to support the Titanic 100 project since its establishment and I have been very impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm of all those involved.  Cobh Town Council particularly is to be congratulated for its comprehensive programme of events throughout 2012. Both Cork County and City Councils have also provided valuable support. This funding of €100,000 from Failte Ireland will obviously allow for further enhancement of the Titanic commemorations.

”Interest in the Titanic is very high here in Ireland and also abroad.  It is hoped that Titanic celebrations will attract a large number of visitors to Cobh and the east Cork area this year, providing a welcome boost to local tourism and local businesses”, said Deputy Stanton.

”In addition to an exciting programme of events, I also believe that the old Titanic Pier in Cobh should be restored. This was the final spot where the passengers for the liner stepped from dry land onto the ship departing Cobh for the New World.  The Titanic pier is of great historical and emotional importance for the many descendants who visit Ireland each year in search of their heritage and I believe that if it were fully restored it would serve to attract even more visitors to the town.
