The Cobh and Great Island Tidy Districts Awards in association with Cobh Credit Union was held in Cobh Heritage Centre last night. The fact that we had to put out extra seats speaks for itself and about 140 people enjoyed the hospitality of Debbie and her staff at the Heritage Centre while we listened to the wonderful music of Alan Carney on arrival.Mayor Jim Quinlan gave a very passionate speech about pride and success in our community.Colman Rassmussen spoke on behalf of the sponsor Cobh Credit Union and his speech also reflected the theme of co operation and community.
Abby Ní Loinsigh, Vincentia de Barra with Hendrick Verwey and Paddy Histon presenting Certificates of Accomplishment for Cross River ferry flowerbed work.
When Cobh Tidy Towns relaunched this awards we wanted to lift the bar, we wanted to show what others were doing, we wanted to encourage others to get involved, but above all we wanted to build Pride in our community. We wanted people to be proud of their own houses, their gardens, their streets and estates and above their town. We wanted people to recognise that every one of us can make a valuable contribution to our collective goal – to have COBH named as Ireland’s Tidiest town.
Terry O’Regan was the judge for this year’s competition.Terry’s commitment, diligence, enthusiasm, expertise and past knowledge of Cobh made the judging and the presentation last night very unique and entertaining. It was lovely to see pictures of different areas of Cobh now and back in 1990.
The standard last night was very high and the photographs of each housing estate, garden, business and hanging basket were a delight to see.The whole Awards just showed how the sum of many can really add up to creating an overall winner. In 2012 we would love to see more individuals, businesses and estates take on the challenge to help us make Cobh a nicer place to live in , work in and visit.
