Following on the success of Cobh Tidy Towns “Greening” Cobh events over the past two years, we are delighted that four of our local food Take Away businesses are going to participate in “Greening” Cobh during the last weekend of August.
Amigos, Gills, Mimmos and Sorrentos are going to use compostable packaging for their take away food businesses throughout that weekend. All of these businesses are currently using some compostable packaging with Gills leading the way in their commitment to using as much sustainable packaging as possible in their day to day business. They are also currently trialing the use of a thermally insulated composter for Cobh Tidy Towns with good results.
Compostable packaging is the ideal packaging for takeaways as it can be composted along with any leftover food. Both the packaging and the food break down into nutrient rich soil when properly composted.
Cobh Community Allotments are also participating in the “Greening of Cobh” by holding their open day on Saturday 30th starting at 2pm.
This year’s event has a harvest theme with vegetable competitions, plant sale, welly throwing, egg and spoon races, boules, kid’s play area and live music. People are welcome to bring a picnic and picnic blanket and enjoy a fun day.
Cobh Youth Services have yet again produced some wonderful artwork made from recyclable materials and these will be on display in the town over the weekend.
The goal of this weekend is to promote waste prevention and raise environmental awareness in our community. Do pop downtown on the morning of Saturday 30th September where Cobh Tidy Town volunteers will have further information to help you make Cobh a greener town.
