2010 Community Games Notes & Results

The 2010 Cobh Community Games went ahead as planned at the GAA complex yesterday afternoon. Despite the early morning rain and the looming condidtions for the afternoon ahead, it didn’t prevent a large crowd from turning out to enjoy watching the young athletes take center stage on what wouldn’t have been the ideal surface after the mornings downpour. This yearly event, held at the GAA for as long as I can remember, seems to have deteriorated somewhat over the  years in terms of public attendence. I distinctly remember taking part in these games throughout my childhood and into my early teens and something I will always remember is the huge public turnout on the day. As one of the athletes parents, David Lynch pointed out to me yesterday, ”I remember when we were kids and taking part in the games, it used to be standing room only here. If only it were the same today”.

Don’t get me wrong, the public attendence was large but for a town the size of Cobh, it could have been better and nothing can be taken away from the GAA and organisers here as the event itself was organised with 100% professionality and from Organisers down to athletes, everyone gave their all. Races were run on schedule to the instruction and PA voice of Oscar Damery, who as usual, was cool as a breeze and did his bit very professionally with his announcements in both Irish and English. The event itself went off very well with only a few drops of rain throughout the afternoon. Please see below for the entire afternoons results.

Organiser Kevin Heelan told us this morning that ”The County Finals are being held on the Sat 12th June starting at 11.00am at the C.I.T. Bishopstown. We will be meeting on the grounds of the Track from 10.30 onwards, and we will be located to the left of the entrance on the grass area, of the track. Those who have qualified for the finals are asked to bring white shorts if possible. A white t/shirts will be supplied on the day. This year we are going to have a total of 44 Athletics Competing in the County Finals. We want to wish them all the very best of luck in their events”

”The event was organised by Fidelma Histon, Libby Histon and myself (Kevin Heelan). Helpers on the day were Paddy Histon, Patsy Histon, Enda Murphy, Oscar Damery, Barry Hayes, Mary deBarra, Vincentia and Olivia deBarra, Lisa and Kathy Histon, Rob Foley, Donnacha Spriggs, Declan Casey, Locker and Michelle Histon, Maeve Egbuloniu, Bernie Histon and Tom Histon.  Our sponsors were Cobh Town Council, Inside Cobh, Supervalu and Cobh Edition’s advertising support. We would also like to thank all the schools for their support in handing out our flyers. Also a special mention for Cobh GAA whose facilities were fantastic on the day”.
