This was always going to be a tight game with both teams very close in the league. Springfield Ramblers started by far the better team against a very strong wind. A few minutes in the first chance came when Ciaran Griffin put the ball into the box looking for his strike partner Nathan O’Connell when the ball was nicked off his toe by a Carrigaline defender. Eoin Kelly was causing problems for the Carrigaline defence throughout the match. Tom Gill and Fionn Duggan were immense in the middle of the park. We got to half time scoreless having played the better football.
We asked the lads to start the second half like the first and they did. A few minutes in Tom Gill scored a cracking 25 yard free kick, too powerful for the keeper to hold. A few minutes later the ball was in the back of the net again but Ciaran was adjudged to be offside. Diarmuid Kearney on the left side was a constant thorn in the side of Carrigaline with his dribbling skills. Carrigaline threw caution to the wind and threw bodies up front but the mean defence of Morgan Dillon Hilton, Cian O’Rourke, Cian Walker and Mikey Foley were giving nothing away. Carrigaline finally broke through in the last 2 minutes when Jamie Bates made a fantastic save to keep his clean sheet. Nathan led the line superbly all day but in the last few minutes really took the pressure off by holding the ball up and winning free kicks. Well done to all on a great team performance but a special mention to Mikey and Fionn who were superb.
