Most places around the world associated with Titanic, including Cobh, are at an advanced stage of planning to mark the hundredth anniversary. In Belfast however, this month marks the beginning of their commemorative year. This is because the Titanic was launched into the water from the Harland and Wolfe Shipyard on 31st May 1911. One of the events that will mark the start of Northern Ireland’s commemorations is the Titanic Heritage and Memory, Centenary Conference at the Council Chamber of Queen’s University Belfast. The overall theme of the conference is to ‘address how the memory of Titanic should be represented in the place of its origin where it was launched into the collective consciousness and unconsciousness of western civilisation’. Speakers include eleven leading experts and academics from around the world, one of which is Michael Martin of the Titanic Trail Cobh who has just completed his PhD at University College Cork. The conference has been arranged by the Scottish Forum for Spatial Planning and those wishing to attend can get registration and fee details from Mrs Roslyn Barnes at isfsp-titanic@qub.ac.uk
A copy of the Conference Programme can be found in the Cobh Tourist information Office.
