ISSUES surrounding the operation of Cobh’s Social Welfare office have been raised by Minister of State Seán Sherlock TD
Minister Sherlock said he has been in contact with his ministerial colleagues in the department of Social Protection and Office of Public Works with a view to resolving the problems that have forced the sporadic closure of the office.
”Over the past two years I understand there is a foul smell in the office from time to time. It smells like sewage. I have now brought this problem to the attention of OPW which owns the building and to Minister Joan Burton’s office. Last week it was closed for a day and a half while again this week the office could not open. I acknowledge this is an unacceptable service to the public and I am liaising with my colleagues in Government to work toward finding a solution,” he said,
It is understood that a proposal has been made to close the office for a period of time to allow extensive investigation into the cause of the problem however as yet definitive course of action has been decided upon.
”At this stage the staff and the public are getting quite irate and I can’t blame them,” he said Minister Sherlock.
