Cobh Wanderers AFC will be welcoming Lucan United to Cobh on the 3RD December 2011 to our grounds at Oldchurch Park, Cobh to play our Senior team in the 3RD Round of the Intermediate Cup, as it has been more than a few years since we have reached the open rounds of the Intermediate Cup and we are very much looking forward to the strong challenge that Lucan will present to us. The squad managed by Dave Ryan and coached by Peter Rowe is made up of young local , energetic, and committed players, most of whom have never played in such an important cup match and although it will be a new experience for most of them we will have in our squad experienced players like John Meade (ex Cobh Ramblers) to help the guys through the big game. We would welcome all the true supporters of soccer in Cobh to come out and support us on the day as we are expecting the Dublin team will be bringing a vocal band of followers as Dublin teams always do to support their team on the day so a large crowd would be very much appreciated by all involved in Cobh Wanderers.
We have worked tirelessly over the past few seasons to upgrade and maintain the excellent facilities we have in Ticknock, we fully appreciate the difficulties we are all suffering in these tough economic times, sport can help to give society a big boost as we have seen with the recent success of the Irish soccer squad in their qualification for Euro 2012, we also all remember with great pride the glory days of Cobh Ramblers and in particular the heroes of 1983 where the town often came to a virtual standstill for days on end to support their local team, the stories as they say are legendary, where many of these players went on to play successfully or manage the Wanderers over many seasons, Paul Keating, George Wilshaw, George Mellerick, Eddie O’Halloran, Liam Naughton, Paul O’Neill, Tim Stack, Mick O’Flynn we ask them all to come out and support us on the day.
The folklore that surrounds the Intermediate Cup particularily in Cobh continues with this band of young players, many of whom were not even born when Ramblers were beating all before them in 1983, this is a great opportunity to put Cobh Wanderers back on the National stage after too many years away.
We would be delighted to see a large crowd cheering on the lads on the day and then to follow on up to our main sponsor’s bar at Jack Doyles in Top of the Hill for a celebratory drink after the game we would appreciate all the support we get on the day.
