Springfield Ramblers 3 Arlington (Kildare) 2
Springfield Ramblers qualified for the last 16 of the U16 SFAI (Barry) Cup with this hard fought win against Kildare side Arlington. With the pitches in Cobh unplayable due to weather conditions the game was played on the Astroturf at Ballea Park, home of Carrigaline United FC. The away side scored very early but Springfield Ramblers soon found themselves back on level terms with a volleyed goal from Ben Rasmussen. In a very tight encounter with both sides evenly matched throughout the field the game continued at level scores until full time.
Extra time proved to be very exciting and decisive. In the first period Arlington struck and scored with a fine shot from the edge of the penalty area to lead at the break in extra time. In the second period Springfield Ramblers were stung into action and substitute Adam Horgan forced a corner on the right side. The corner was flighted brilliantly by Kyle Hurley and was met with a bullet header from Sean Richardson for the equalising goal.
Buoyed by that Springfield Ramblers went looking for a winning goal and were rewarded shortly afterwards when Horgan broke through with great pace beyond the defence to hit an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. This proved to be the decisive moment. Though both sides had opportunities in the closing stages Ramblers hung on to reach the last 16 and will now have an away tie against Limerick side Regional United in the next round.
The Springfield Ramblers club wishes all the best to Arlington for the rest of the season and thanks them for a very sporting encounter. The club also extends its sincere thanks to the Carrigaline United club for the use of their facilities on the day.
