Although the 100th Anniversary of the tragedy has been and gone, the Cobh connection to Titanic is being built upon for future generations. Tourism Ireland’s Chief Executive, Niall Gibbons, will be heading up a delegation of VIP’s on a memorial voyage to RMS Titanic on Sunday, 14th April. The attendance of Niall Gibbons attests to the significance of our maritime history for the tourism industry in the South of Ireland. The public interest in the story of the Titanic continues to grow, and is of major consequence to both the people of Cobh, Cork City and County.
L.É. Ciara is bringing the group on the commemorative voyage and wreath laying ceremony. The delegation will sail to the Titanic’s anchorage, near Roches Point in Cork Harbour, on the morning of the anniversary of her visit, 101 years ago. Under the escort of the Irish Navy and the command of Captain Lieutenant Commander Tony Geraghty, several dignitaries and celebrities will be in attendance. Included in the group will be; Rory Golden, the first Irish diver to see Titanic in the year 2000 at a depth of 3875 metres; Seascapes Producer, Marcus Connaughton; The Mayor of Cobh, Sinead Sheppard; Captain Michael McCarthy of the Port of Cork; The President and Secretary of the Irish Titanic Society, Ed Coughlan and Chantal Murray. Key players behind the initiative, are Cobh Historian, Dr Michael Martin; Gillen Joyce, proprietor of the Titanic Experience and local businessman Patrick O’Shea of the Commodore Hotel.
The LE Ciara will also be open to the public on Sunday between 2.00 & 4.00 pm at the Deepwater Quay.
