Arcadia in Grey – Darn Thorn Exhibition Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh.
15 Aug – 13 Sept – Opening Reception Friday 14 Aug 7pm
Arcadia in Grey is an exhibition of photo-media and installation-based works by Cork based artist Darn Thorn. Focusing on how landscape functions within the personal and cultural imagination, the content of the show stems from correspondence with individuals within County Cork. After interviewing members of the local community, the artist has photographed rural sites that hold personal significance for them. Using re-imagined motifs borrowed from pictorial photography and romanticism, Arcadia in Grey asks the viewer to question how images of the rural landscape as represented by the tourism industry impact on our notions of regional identity.
Darn Thorn (1975) was born in Sligo, Ireland and holds a MA in Fine Art from Monash University, Australia. He has exhibited in Australia, China, Ireland, The Netherlands, Norway & the UK. He is published in Photofile, The Age (Australia) and 36 Exp. (University of Manchester). A studio holder at Spike Island, UK (2010-13), he recently participated in the Bristol Biennial (2012) and EXPOSURE at the FORMAT International Photography Festival, Derby, UK, (2013). In 2014 he has been a resident at Fire Station Artists Studio, Dublin and Malakta Art Centre, Malax, Finland. He currently lives in Cork, Ireland.
