Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has welcomed today’s announcement that an additional €106 million will be made available to Local Authorities to repair local roads. The scale of the flooding and storms over the Christmas period has led to unprecedented damage to roads in the East Cork area which has seriously hampered access for local people on affected routes.
“This funding is being made available by the Department of Transport in response to submissions from Local Authorities following their assessments of damage the recent severe weather. I understand from Cork County Council that there were over 60 road collapses and/or severe flooding on local East Cork roads and the estimated cost of remedial works could be over €10 million.
“In addition to these critical repairs, there are also ongoing costs in relation to extensive pothole repairs, the clearing of drains and culverts to ease surface water and normal maintenance. The labour and material costs of these works are substantial and I hope that this additional funding will help ease the burden on Cork County Council and allow all the works to be completed as soon as possible as I know people in many rural areas are still very concerned about road surfaces, access and the potential damage to their vehicles.
