Fota House and The Dublin Theatre Company are proud to present The Tailor and Ansty by Eric Cross, adapted by P.J. O’Connor with RONAN WILMOT and SILE NUGENT on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th March at 8.00 p.m. Tickets €20.00
The Tailor and Ansty by Eric Cross was first published as a book in 1942 and banned in Ireland shortly afterwards.
The banning of the book on the grounds of alleged indecency and obscenity, was to lay bare once again the absurdity that was Irish censorship. In the ensuing four-day debate in the Senate, one Senator, who claimed to have read all authors “from Rabelais down”, said he had never read a “finer collection of smut”.
Having toured the country with this remarkable local West Cork story that sparked such national outrage, The Dublin Theatre Company returns to Fota House for the second time and audiences can both enjoy this highly entertaining production, as well as having the option of dining beforehand at Bramley Lodge with a pre-show Dinner for €25.00. To book at Bramley Lodge telephone 021 4882499.
When the ban was lifted in 1963, Cross’s novel about the lives of the Tailor and Ansty was adapted for stage by P.J. O’Connor and was first performed in The Peacock Theatre, Dublin in 1967.
Enjoy the true story of what happened The Tailor (Timothy Buckley) and his wife Ansty when the Eric Cross book was published. Enjoy the Tailor’s wonderful stories, experiences and the tragedy that befell them when church and state laid their heavy hands on this innocent couple.
Timothy Buckley (1860–1945) and his wife, Ansty (died 1947), are buried in the small graveyard by the lake in the beautiful valley of Gougane Barra, West Cork.
Prebooking Essential. Book online at www.fotahouse.com – For further information telephone Fota House – 021 4815543
