It has taken years of persistence, planning and hard work but we are delighted with Monday’s news in Dublin that Cobh has been awarded a 3rd Gold Medal in the National Tidy Towns Competition in Category F, ‘Large Towns Population 10 – 15k’.
This result comes about having submitted an extensive report covering work undertaken in Cobh from June 2016 to June 2017 and an unnanounced visit from an adjudicator over the summer months. Our town is one of the most architecturally stunning towns in Ireland and with it’s harbour location and historical significance it deserves to be a Gold Medal Town.
This status only comes about thanks to the work and support of so many. A huge thanks to our volunteers who go out in all weathers working to make our town a better one. Our work is undertaken with the support of Cork County Council outdoor staff, local Councillors, Cobh Credit Union, Port of Cork, Doyle Shipping Group and the people of Cobh who have supported us in Church Gate collections, Calendar sales and donations. We thank you all.
Thanks to the ‘Green Schools’ for all their hard work, the children who participated in our art competition and the judges for giving their time. Thank you to Cobh Library and Cobh Maritime for hosting our exhibitions and Cobh Heritage Centre for hosting our Spring Clean Launch.
Thank you to Mike Bardlsey for poster design and sharing our news on Cobh Edition. Thanks to Mary O’ Connor for telling our stories in Great Island Community News. Thanks to all involved in beautiful Cuskinny, especially Jim Wilson for protecting and preserving our wildlife and to all in Cobh Allotments for their work in trying to make our community a more sustainable one.
Our job would be much more difficult if it were not for the Residents Associations who came on board during the year an organised area clean ups with great involvement from all ages. Thanks to the businesses who spruced up their frontages and continued the ‘War on the cigarette Butts’ by sweeping outside their premises. You can see the 3rd Gold Medal is a community collaboration.
We achieved 323 points only 9 behind the winning town Birdhill. We came 3rd in South Cork Region after Ballincollig at 327 and Kinsale at 324 . The National Title is within our grasp. Onwards and Upwards for Cobh. Thank you.
