AST open new Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Clinic at Little Island

The AST Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Clinic in Rushbrooke, Cobh, have recently extended their clinical services and opened a brand new state of the art medical facility at Little Island. The new clinic is located at BAM House in the Euro Business Park and brings a much needed service closer to the residents of Glanmire, Glounthaune, Little Island and the City.

AST, the acronym for ‘Another Step Together,’ is directed and managed by Adrian and Susanne Tanzer, and backed up by their highly trained medical staff. Their clinic has been providing rehabilitation and physiotherapy therapies at Rushbrooke in Cobh since 2005 and AST have gained world wide recognition for their standards of excellence.

Adrian and Suzanne’s daughter, Josefine, will be running the new clinic at Little Island. Josefina specialises in neurological conditions. Working alongside Josefina will be Andrea Gaal, an orthopaedic and paediatric specialist.

The new ultra modern clinic services patients’ needs with an extensive assortment of medical equipment, geared to facilitate the therapeutic requirements of all the treatments. These include an un-weighing system for spinal cord injuries, a stand up frame, a balance trainer, a sling table and many other types of specialized apparatus. The location, closer to Cork City, will also be much more convenient for many of their existing patients.

The full ranges of rehabilitation and physiotherapy treatments provided by AST are classified under three sections; these are neurology, orthopedics and pediatrics.

Within the neurological rehabilitation treatments, patients in a specific state of neurological health can be helped to improve their overall condition and become rehabilitated to a better life style. These include stroke victims and those who have suffered aneurisms as well as patients with spinal cord injuries sustained in traffic accidents.

The orthopedic section addresses the needs of clients with back problems, shoulder and neck pain, as well as sports injuries, etc. Patients with orthopedic issues, and those recovering from hip and knee replacements, are helped using treatments such as ultrasound, electrotherapy, manual therapy, trigger point therapy, exercise programmes, soft and deep tissue massage.

For younger patients, the paediatric therapies at AST are highly focussed on cerebral palsy. CP patients suffer from neurological disorders that can involve brain and nervous system functions such as movement, learning, hearing and seeing. The goal of treatment is to help the child be as independent as possible through occupational, physical and speech therapies.  The paediatric section at AST also provides specialised care for down syndrome children, with speech and exercise therapies as well as occupational therapy.
