With many of the club athletes preparing for the Dublin City Marathon in October, the recent Boston Scientific/Clonmel AC half marathon was seen as a good stepping stone on the long road to the nations capital.
A traveling contingent that included fourteen participants and some very loyal supporters was a sign of the progress that the club has made in such a short period of time, with this being a large increase on the three club members who had taken part in the Cork City half marathon in early June.
The race times recorded by the various Ballymore Cobh AC athletes were further proof that the hard work being put in under club coach Rob Doherty’s watch is reaping its just reward.
First home of the ladies was Orla O’Rourke (1hr.37min.31sec.) who put in a fine performance to finish amongst the Top 20 women who took part. Orla has plenty of experience at the marathon distance also and will run a big race in October if maintaining this impressive form.
Leading the men home was Trevor Cummins (1.24.11), who will be pleased with achieving an improvement of just over five minutes on the time he registered earlier in the summer when running in Ballyheigue.
Shane Meyler (1.39.37), James Donovan (1.42.59), Kevin O’Keeffe (1.43.37) and Carl Pender (1.45.55) all recorded personal records for the distance, the last named knocking seven minutes off his previous best. These solid performances will reassure these athletes that they are working in the right direction to the bigger goal of completing the fabled 26.2miles come the autumn.
Sinead Daly (1.52.53), Jennifer and Malcolm Meade (both 1.53.09) all came home well within the sub two hour mark and can be pleased with their efforts on what was a warm day in Tipperary.
Meanwhile, the clubs underage system continues to develop. With the regular Wednesday sessions proving popular with the 13-17yr old section. As these juvenile members continue their progress, it won’t be long before they are being entered into competitive action.
In other news, Ballymore Cobh AC have recently entered agreement with Cork Local Sports Partnership to launch a Fit4Life program in early September.
Fit4Life, which has been hugely successful throughout the country, encourages members of the local community to lead an active lifestyle through walking, jogging and running.
This program will be suitable for people who would like to improve their health and fitness whilst enjoying the social aspect of meeting up as group on a regular basis. For more information on this exciting initiative, please contact us by emailing ballymorecobhac@gmail.com
