IMG_5854Beautiful weather conditions over the weekend certainly played its part in the massive turnout for the 2013 Cobh Garda District Soccer Blitz held at the John Murphy Memorial Park in Cobh. Once again it was the talent of hundreds of local kids that shone through over this year’s three-day event, which was run by local Garda and volunteers, in conjunction with local soccer clubs.

Upwards of 350 children and teenagers took part in the event this year, with Supermacs Cobh sponsoring the boys sections and the Commodore Hotel, the girls section. According to event organiser, Community Garda Eric McCarthy, ‘The event is getting bigger and bigger as the years go by. I’ve heard many stories from days gone by about how big the Blitz used to be and I hope that the current tournament is beginning to size up to those of old’.

‘This blitz usually goes on every year over a weekend in August but was brought forward to July this year’ continued Garda McCarthy. ‘Funds for cups, medals and trophies for the kids were donated by Supermacs and the Commodore Hotel and we sincerely thank them so much for their help in enabling us to give every participant something to take away from the weekend. Without the support of these local businesses, prize-giving would have been an issue. Once again I thank you all. Special mention mus also go to Cork City player Jason Abbott and Cobh Ramblers players Alan O’Flynn and Shane Hallahan for giving up their own time to attend and present the kids with their medals. I’m already looking forward to next year’.
