The Chairperson for the pressure group, Cork Harbour Health Study, Amy Cullen has said she and her group are appalled to learn that the Government appointed body set up to examine the future use of the Irish Steel site will not examine or determine what will happen to the toxic waste there.
Amy Cullen said “Not only has our community been insulted and let down by the Minister for Health’s comments recently when she denied us a Baseline Health Study, but now the Government is turning the knife and adding insult to injury by informing us through the media that it cares no more about what lies on Haulbowline.”
“The Government should be left in no doubt however, that we will settle for nothing less than a thorough independent health study into why such high numbers of Cobh people are contracting cancers and other diseases. We will not give up until every last square inch of waste is removed from Haulbowline Island and the Harbour.”
We have to ask the question, why is the Government prepared to spend €millions of taxpayers money on setting up a body that will overlook the most important aspect of Haulbowline’s and our futures, when that money could be better spent on protecting people’s health.
Finally, our group is currently in the process of organising a public meeting in Cobh about these issues and would appeal to other harbour communities to join with us to fight against these appalling and unforgivable government decisions.
