Carrignafoy CC Awards 2014

ccc1Carrignafoy Community College held their Annual awards ceremony in the Commodore Hotel in Cobh on the 8th. May. The guest speaker was recently appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Rear Admiral Mark Mellett. Rear Admiral Mellett held positions as officer in command of the LE Orla and LE Ciara , in addition to command of the flagship LE Eithne. A native of Castlebar, Co.Mayo he was delighted to be present on the night in celebration of an excellent year of progression in the academic and cultural field of Carrignafoy Community College.

The talk given by Rear Admiral Mellett focussed on the needs of our young people to be positive in life and to view any failure in their journey through life, as an opportunity to grow and learn for the future. The emphasis was on growing and maturing in a safe and challenging learning environment.

The awards given on the night reflected the range of talents that are within the college, and students and parents were applauded for success and support of the ethos within Carrignafoy College. Awards included subject and special awards including sporting successes in soccer-Evan O’Leary,Evan O’Mahony and Patrick Fingleton, Boxing-Callum Walsh and Rugby-Dean Cronin. Recognition was also given to the PLC sector who have managed to scale new heights and provide encouragement to the impetus of adult and continuing education. Academic achievement awards were presented to Natalia Fic in first year, Andrew O’Reilly in second year and Aaron O’Connor who also excelled in Irish, Geography and Woodwork. Performing Arts awards were presented to Jack O’Leary, Rebeccca Gardiner, Amelia Kevany, Tom Barry and Hannah Barry, following our recent successful production of “Over the Rainbow” directed by former student Chris Doyle.

The Green Schools committee members, Jordan Cashman and Anna Geary were commended for helping in keeping a focus on a clean and pleasant environment. The Faith Friends received due recognition under the stewardship of Sr. Emmanuel- Jayne O’Reilly, Kayleigh Burns, Hannah McCarthy, Roisin Mockler, Patrick Bransfield and Natasha Alnajdi. Other areas that were recognised were attendance, school breakfast Club, and SCP Homework, in addition to Bevan Murphy-Garda Youth Award. Highly commended were the junior and senior awardees for their successes in the New
Generation Technology Award and the CEIA School Robot competition. The staff and management of the Commodore Hotel were very welcoming and very professional in their attention to detail.. The community award went to Frank O’Brien for his support of the Special Olympics, while the highlight was the announcement of the student of the year, for excellence in the academic and practical fields, Maciej Beczek. Our thanks to Tadhg Mockler for his excellent pieces on the keyboard, kindly supplied by Bill Charlton. Rebecca Gardiner closed the night with a recital of a moving and encouraging piece titled “Let No one steal your dreams”.
