Cobh – Great Island Tidy Districts Awards 2010

The Cresent was voted Cobh’s Tidiest District for 2010

The winners of the *Cobh – Great Island Tidy Districts Awards* were announced at a Gala Awards ceremony in Cobh Heritage on Thursday night. This ideal venue was packed and full of atmosphere and anticipation of the six winners to be announced. Starting the proceedings, the Mayor of Cobh, Cllr. Finbarr O’Driscoll spoke of the huge voluntary efforts that are now being made by so many people in Cobh to improve our town.

Terry Anderson, the chairman of the board of Cobh Credit Union spoke of their commitment towards the work of the Tidy Towns Committee and vowed to keep the support coming as Cobh works towards the ultimate goal of winning the National Tidy Towns competition.

Hendrick Verwey, the chairman of Cobh Tidy Towns committee outlined the vast improvements that have occurred in Cobh in the past five years by saying, “There are more flowers, less weeds and less litter than five years ago. There is a greater awareness of the importance of keeping Cobh looking beautiful and a greater willingness of people to get involved. We have increased our rating by over thirty marks in the last four years and we can increase our marks by over thirty in the next few years” he said. “Can we, the people of Cobh win the Tidy Towns Competition? Yes we can”, he concluded!

The Award winners were then announced by the MC’s for the evening, Claire Cullinane and Páraig Lynch in the format of an audio visual presentation. Each award recipient received a valuable voucher for Garden supplies and a silver framed certificate. Cobh’s Tidiest District for 2010 is *The Cresent* In addition to the €500 voucher they also received a large banner to be hung at the entrance to The Cresent for the entire year.

The *Cobh** – Great Island Tidy Districts Awards 2010 *were organised by Cobh Tidy Towns Committee and generously sponsored by Cobh Credit Union and Cobh Town Council. The Awards reception was generously sponsored by Cobh Heritage Centre and Cobh Town Council. Music was provided by the ever talented Alan Carney.
