Cobh U 16 Camogie commenced their League campaign away to St Catherines on Monday 30th April. There was a strong cross wind and as a result this game took a while to get going with most of the play between both 45’s In these early stages Emma Moran, Chloe Cashman and Rebecca Crotty were playing well for Cobh. St Catherines built up a 2 point lead with in the first fifteen minutes. Cobh eventually got on the board with a pointed 45 by Aoife O Connor after good play from Laura Stafford & Rosie Ford . St Catherines created more chances as the half went on but good defensive work from Tara Looney , Kate Maher & Jen McCarthy kept the gap to 1 point. Catherines pressure eventually told with a well taken goal before halftime to leave a score of 1-2 to 0-1 at the short whistle.
Cobh started the second half brightly and a good Rebecca Crotty point assisted by Orna McCarthy and Laura Stafford narrowed the gap. Cobh had a number of shots for scores but found the Catherines Goal Keeper in good form. Catherines then gained control and added 3 points to their total before a fine point from Toni Butler left a score of 1-5 v 0-3 midway through the half. The Cobh defence continued to work well with Sophie Maher and Captain Ellen Stafford prominent and with the forwards coming more into the game benefitting from some great puck outs from Clodagh Titbbits the game was still there to be won. A good goal from Aoife O Connor after good work from Shannid Mcgrath was a just reward for Cobh and brought them back into the game. Unfortunately Catherines scored 1-1 to leave a score of 2-6 V 1-3 with 5 minutes to go. Cobh continued to create chances with shots from Ashling Farrell and Caoimne Leahy been saved.
Cobh continued to press and were rewarded with a cracking goal by Aoife O Connor from a 40 metre free after Chloe Thompson was fouled to leave just a goal between them.
Unfortunately time ran out on a gallant Cobh Team who were forcing the issue right to the end. Final score Catherines 2- 6 V 2-3 Cobh
