Sean Kelly MEP has welcomed today’s decision by Health Minister, Dr James Reilly, to launch an investigation into the higher than average cancer rate in Cobh, following concerns raised at European Parliament level by Mr Kelly and locals. “The people of Cobh have been waiting for action on this issue for over 10 years, having suffered a 37% higher than average rate of cancer in the area. A comprehensive baseline health study has never been carried out at the landfill site which has been emitting dangerous toxins known to be carcinogenic,” Mr Kelly said.

“Just a few weeks ago, the European Commission directed Irish authorities to take decisive action on the Haulbowline landfill within a three month timeframe under threat of court action. The warning followed a petition of over 5,000 signatures I brought before a parliamentary committee in conjunction with Cork Harbour Health pressure group,” the Ireland South MEP continued.

The successful petition called for immediate action regarding the failed implementation of EU laws with regard to the Cobh site. The landfill has operated unlicensed for over 10 years despite a previous European Court of Justice ruling against it. Mr Kelly added that environmental and economic concerns are also to the fore in the Haulbowline campaign and must also be addressed.
