Spike Island Tours have resumed –
Michael Martin’s guided tours of Spike Island have resumed and are operating every weekend in the month of May. Tours will depart at 2pm every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday in May. Sunday 1st May – Jack Gilmartin’s fascinating free tours of the Old Church Cemetery will take place on the first Sunday of each month this summer. Starting at 2.30 pm at the main gate of the cemetery, the first tour begins today. The amazing history that spans over three centuries of this graveyard which has over 11,000 recorded burials is recounted in a very entertaining and captivating way by Jack. His depth of knowledge and witty style makes this tour unmissable

Sunday 8th May – Lusitania Commemoration in Cobh – This ceremony of prayers, musical honours and the laying of wreaths is organised by Cobh Tourism and commences at the Lusitania graves in the Old Church Cemetery at 1.45 pm. At approximately 2.30 pm a parade will leave from the Old Town Hall on Lynch’s Quay to the Lusitania Peace Memorial in Cobh Town Centre where further ceremonies will take place. The ceremonies are fitting memorials to the more than 1100 people who died, including almost one hundred children. It seeks to remind us of the heart wrenching tragedy and heartbreak of the events in the aftermath of the sinking.

Saturday 21st May – Fota Wildlife Park – Bio Blitz 2011 21st-22nd May – Bio Blitz brings together wildlife experts in a race against time to see how many species can be recorded in 24hour period. Six sites across Ireland are taking part in this year’s blitz, including Fota Wildlife Park, with each site competing to find the most species.
Saturday 21st May – Official Opening of Springfield Ramblers AstroTurf pitch at 2.45m – The grounds will be rededicated as John Murphy Memorial Park. The opening ceremony will be performed by former Republic Of Ireland International Ray Houghton & John Delaney CEO Football Association Of Ireland.
