Sam Maguire visit to Cobh Schools (Jan 25th 2011)
Five primary schools in Cobh received a visit from the Sam Maguire Cup in a welter of excitement on Tuesday last. The tour started in Walterstown at 9am where Nicholas Murphy, midfielder on the victorious Cork team last September, was greeted to a rapturous welcome from the assembled pupils and staff followed by a Question and Answer session in the hall. Gaelscoil Uí hEigeartaigh was next on the agenda with the Cup and player in great demand for photos and questions on everything from diet to playing skills. Rushbrooke Primary School was a sea of red and white but unfortunately the sheer numbers of children and staff trying to have their photos taken with the trophy ruled out any interview with Nicholas. Jimmy Cronin gave a history lesson on ‘Sam Maguire the man’ to the enraptured pupils in Naomh Iosaef, our next port of call. St. Marys’ was our last school of the day and what a reception! The pupils and staff were assembled in the yard and greeted the cup with a display of colour and noise worthy of Croke Park. Miss McElhenney gave us her recollection of that great day in Dublin last September and for a moment it seemed like we were all back there with her. After the schools visits were complete the Cup also paid a visit to friends of Cobh Gaa at Cobh Credit Union, Ultimate Sports, Ryan’s Bar and Cobh Dry Cleaners.
All involved with the Gaa in Cobh would like to thank the schools for facilitating the visit of ‘Sam’ and give a special word of thanks to Nicholas Murphy who is so gracious with his time whenever our club asks him to visit. A great day all round, worth waiting 20 years for!
Adult Gaelic Football: Training for the new football season continues on Tuesday and Friday nights in the Top Pitch at 7:45pm. New players are welcome to come along and join in. Join Cobh Gaa on Facebook .
A Table Quiz will be held in the club pavilion on Friday, February 11th, as a fundraiser for the players training fund. Cost €20 per table of 4, starts at 8:30pm. All support greatly appreciated.
