u12 Street Leagues Come to an end

The U12 section of the hurling street leagues came to a conclusion on Friday night last under lights in the top field with four cracking games.

It was unseasonably cold with a north wind blowing across the field towards the spires. Fidelma and Bernie in the shop were doing a brisk trade in hot soup compliments of Kevin Hilliard of ‘Just Food’

.“Hurling is a Summer game” the purists will tell you and they’re probably right but it didn’t bother the boys and girls who lined out that night. There was a lot of pride at stake and all knew they had a good chance of winning their last fixture of the tournament as there had been nothing between any of the pairings when they met in previous rounds.

For the older players it would be their last year and this brought added pressure, for the eleven year olds there was the chance to make a name for yourself on the big stage and for the young ones it was a huge step up from the U9’s Sunday morning tournament of last year.

First up were Gaels and the Crokes in the shield final. Crokes had won their last encounter by the narrowest of margins but Gaels had shown some of their potential in the last few games. Crokes held a one goal advantage at the break but couldn’t maintain their lead and The Gaels pulled away in the end.

Davitts and Setanta were competing in the second final of the night and it would have been a brave man to predict the outcome of this one. The teams had drawn in their last meeting and were almost inseparable for what turned out to be the game of the night. It was score for score all through and the match went to extra time. Still level, the game went to sudden death and could have gone either way. In the end it was Setanta who claimed victory with a goal to bring a great contest to a close.

Eoghan Rua got the better of Cuchulainn in the penultimate final of the evening. A couple of early scores for the winners meant Cuchulainn were always chasing the game. To be fair they never gave and showed great fighting spirit throughout.

‘The Michael Hayes Shield’ bears the names of many great teams going back to 1995. Names like ‘Town’ ‘Russell Heights’ and ‘Waltertsown’ to name but a few. The 40’s and Na Fianna would add a new chapter in 2012 in another game too close to call. It was ebb and flow all night with the 40’s just about staying in front throughout. Getting scores at vital times won it for them in the end, in a pulsating final in which both sets of players and their mentors did themselves proud.

The disco in the Club afterwards for all the players showed how kids accept and move on. After the gruelling evening of matches I don’t know where they got the energy from!

Five weeks of matches and as many before that in the planning we could probably all do with the break. ( Just the U7 and U9 finals to look forward to next Sunday.) A thank you to all those who helped out over the weeks in what is a big undertaking after a long season. Thanks to the parents and supporters who braved the elements to cheer on their team and help to make the event worthwhile.

Finally, a big thank you to our Sponsor for the last six years, Cobh CreditUnion. The name has become synonymous with the Hurling Street Leagues and long may it continue.
