Cobh Golf club supports local hospital

Each year, Cobh Golf Club chose several charitable purposes that are supported through special competition days. All income from these days goes towards the named charities. On Friday 21/9, a fundraiser for the Cobh Hospital was held and the amount of €1,160 was raised for the hospital. A cheque was handed over to Toddy Stafford and Angela O’Meara on the same evening. Cobh Golf Club’s initiative was headed by Liaison officer and Club member Tom Fleming. The Club also thanks all participants for attending and thereby contributing to this important cause.

The funds will be used to further improve facilities and care given to the 38 elderly residents who are being looked after by ca 15 staff and volunteers. Cobh Community Hospital had until 2 years ago, been partly funded by the HSE. That funding has been abolished in 2010, and Cobh hospital is now one of only three community-run hospitals in Ireland. A development fund was set up by the group “Friends of Cobh Hospital” and chairman Toddy Stafford said, that donations are needed to enlarge and improve facilities for the residents. Improvement on dining- and visiting areas, washing facilities and personal storage spaces are planned. As the hospital is a charity, all donations are fully tax deductible. The “Friends of Cobh hospital” always welcome any help, new members and donations, and are grateful for the huge support given in the community. The group can be contacted through the hospital.

Cobh Golf Club abolishes Joining Fee

In a surprise move, the Club has in September decided to abolish the joining fee that was in place since the new course at Marino was built. Cobh Golf Club owns one of the best regarded golf courses in Munster and has held membership numbers stable at around 600 for the past 3 years. However, the Club’s membership capacity has never been filled to full capacity, and the club hopes that the abolishment of the €3,000 joining fee will lead to a renewed interest in membership and strong inflow of new members. At an annual subscription fee of €790 for full members (€640 for over 65’s) – or at a monthly payment of €70 – the cost of playing golf in Cobh has now become more affordable. It should also be mentioned that juvenile and student membership is still subsidised by the club, at €100 and €150 per year, as the club wants to actively support the sport at a young age.
