Cobh Golf Club drew the attention of many yesterday as it held it’s Official Opening Day in conjunction with Port Of Cork to celebrate the new 18 hole championship course at Marino.
The course opened for full play in June 2009, the parkland style course is located on an elevated area of land with panoramic views over the inner Cork harbour. Water also features on the golf course, guarding two of the Par 3, one of which has an island green with the River Lee forming a stunning backdrop.
Irish Open Champion Shane Lowry attended and officially opened the course after an 8 hole demonstration game with Cobh’s resident professional Morgan O’Donovan and East Cork’s professional Don McFarlane. During the demo Shane showed how human he really he is by dumping 2 balls in the water on the signature 10th hole.
A ‘Celebrity Team’ with GAA football stars Colin Corkery, Dinny Allen and Billy Morgan teed right behind Shane Lowry, and a further celebrity team featuring Pat Morley, Damian Richardson and ex Irish rugby international Paul Dean. Iconic hurler Sean Og O’hAilpin also attended the celebrations. The Golf Club put together a huge programme including golf and family competitions, music (with 96fm broadcasting from the grounds), entertainment, exhibitions and barbecue.
