chamber3The Cobh & Harbour Chamber’s Annual Language Competition took place on Tuesday in the Commodore Hotel. The language competition now celebrating its 25th anniversary was first the brain child of Mr. Oliver Hawes who was the then President of the Chamber. Oliver was present on the day along with Chamber President John Sweeney, Development Manager Jo English and Mary Brennan who co-ordinated the event.

“This competition has gone from strength to strength over the years and we had nigh on 40 students from 5 schools doing 4 languages Irish, French, German and Spanish. It gives the students an opportunity to show their fluency and also gives them some confidence prior to their oral examinations for leaving Cert.” said Jo English after the competition ended. “We wish to thank everyone who took part, students, teachers and our judges, also the Bank of Ireland for its sponsorship, the Commodore Hotel for the venue and refreshments and our photographers.”Commented John Sweeney.

Oliver spoke to the students and guests before the awards were presented. “I don’t think that any other Chamber in Ireland has such a competition. The dedication & sponsors have enabled the business language competition to grow from strength to strength over the past 25 years. “ He continued to praise the Chamber for their continued dedication and commitment.

Oliver went on to mention the success of the competition is due to Francoise Letellier, French Consul, who judged the competition and provided the prizes for many years. “ I was delighted last year that our president held a reception for her on her retirement to live in France.” said Oliver. He ended by congratulating all the teachers for their valued work in fostering an awareness of their particular language and enthusiasm that they have created in the students . Judges for the competition this year were Jean Francois for French, Emer Hastings for Spanish, Claire Ní Mhuirthuile for Irish and Paul Farrell for German. “Once again, the students have shown their knowledge and love of their chosen language and it shows in the level of excellence here today,” said Paul.
