cathedralThe newly ordained Bishop, William Creane arrived at Cobh (Great Island) Community Centre on Sunday evening to rapturous applause from the crowded hall of Priests, guests and parishioners.

A huge organisational undertaking took place by staff members and over 100 adult volunteers and 30 transition year students from both the Colaiste Muire and Carrignafoy Community College to welcome the Bishop to the centre. Among those who welcomed him were Chairman of the Board of Directors John Coleman, Facilities Manager Jim Langford and Michael Farrell. “It’s a great day today and the biggest event the centre has undertaken with appoximately 800 people here. The centre wouldn’t work without the volunteers who have worked tirelessly today. Today has shown what community is all about with everyone working together.” said John Coleman.

William Creane took to the stage and spoke of how deeply humbling this experience has made him feel. In his own words it was “Something else!” “I hope to make a good job and am completely overwhelmed by the welcome Cobh has given me.” he said. He went on and spoke with great humour and said he was delighted the day went so well.

“The Community Centre were responsible for the stewarding of parking both in the centre and the carpark of St. Mary’s National School, over 100 volunteers served tea and coffee and without them the day would not have gone as well as it did.” said Mary Kelly who orgainsed the tea stations. Keating’s Londis Plus, Centra and SuperValu kindly supplied the sandwiches and cakes.
