Cobh Pirates RFC were delighted to accept an invitation from Munster Rugby to participate in the half-time match at the recent Magners League Game, Munster v Benetton Treviso, Italy, on October 22nd, Thomond Park Stadium, Limerick. The opposition was Ennis RFC at u11 age grade. The full age grade travelled to Thomond on the night, where they shouted on as Munster enjoyed a league win, and for the first time in the history of the club, we had an underage team play at half-time in Thomond Park. The Pirates’ team acquitted themselves well, with a big roar from the 15,000 strong crowd as Cian Lynch dotted down the team’s only try as they lost out 2-1 on the night. The guys had a busy night as they were interviewed before and after the match; please lookup http://comeonmunster.ie/ to see the videos.
After experiencing relatively good domestic success from the early nineties to 2006 culminating in winning the coveted Munster Junior Cup with the adult teams; Cobh Pirates are now in the middle of a rebuilding program with the main focus on age grade rugby, u6 to u19, at the club . The mini-section is the foundation of this, with ex-players returning as coaches and player recruitment 50% up on last year. We have nearly 300 kids playing underage rugby at the Club this season. Our Summer Tag tournament has introduced many local kids to rugby; with 44 players alone that travelled with u10/11 age grade to Thomond Park. The mini section trains every Saturday at 11am in the Paddocks, Cobh and serves the Great Island, Carrigtwohill and Glounthaune catchment areas, with newcomers very welcome. The core of our u11 group have being together nearly 5 years now and are developing this year under coaches Bernard Kiely, Colman Rassmussen, Richie Daly, Damien Keating & Mick Soames. The u11s have already played a couple of Blitzes this season, where all players have participated, but, on the night Pirates’ were represented by: Matthew Soames, Conor Pasley, Charlie Rasmussen, Cathal O’ Dea, Zach Devlin, Jack O Donovan, Cian Lynch, Bobby Kahn, Kevin Murphy, Liam Devlin-Buckley, Alex Mulligan and Ray Keating.
