Cobh Pirates victorious in the League Final
Cobh Pirates J2 side came away with the spoils in a hard fought win over Dunmanway in Musgrave Park. Cobh played the majority of the Rugby , particulary in the opening 30 minutes, but the Dunmanway defense stood firm and were keen to kick at every oppurtunity. Cobhs Conor O Regan crashed over for the games only try close to half time, after some great work in the pack by Dave Mulcahy, Tadgh Kelleher and Ciaran Duignam. Gary Price and “Man of the Match” Liam Greaney tested the defense at every opurtunity and ran good support lines. The backline marshalled by Alan Walley and James Murphy
ran at the opposition, making good groung in doing so. The back 3 of Stephen ONeill, Tadgh Hawes and Eion Ryan had a busy opening half retrieving and attacking. The 2nd half became more of a forward battle and with the older heads of Peter Ahearn, Dean McKweon and Captain Jason Anglim marshalling the pack Pirates held firm. An able Brendan O Connor was replaced by Cian Conneely who made a great break immediately after his introduction only be be stopped short of the Dunmanway try line.
Dunmanway were stopped in the closing 10 minutes with what may have been a game saving tackle by Peter “The Brick” Ahearn. Soon after Pirates crossed the Dunmanway line twice but were judged to be held up on both occasions. This is the first silverware achieved by this side this season and with the team in contention in 2 other semi finals and a quarter final there may well be more to come.
