Cobh Tidy Towns Committee and volunteers had a very successful two days “selling flowers” in Garvey’s Super Valu last week.
The Colour the Hill! project involves the purchase and planting of fifteen self watering large flower troughs to hang on the paling and eleven baskets for each lighting pole on Ticknock Hill – the main approach road to Cobh. When filled with flowers these will help to brighten the approach to the town and make it very welcoming and appealing. The total cost of this project is €4500 in the first year and €700 each year thereafter to simply replace the flowers each season.
Artist Lilly Higgins of the Creativity Club drew on an artist’s impression of the troughs and baskets and the 600 flowers that will need to be planted on a large board. Each flower was sold for €5 and the purchaser invited to colour in their own flower. €1982 was collected over the two days and further opportunities to buy a flower and make a contribution will be available in the town centre in the coming week.
The Tidy Towns committee is urgently seeking volunteers to maintain the old sections of the Old Church Cemetery and keep it looking respectable and respectful to the thousands buried there. If you can use a lawnmower or strimmer and have an hour or more to spare each week at a time that suits you, please contact Hendrick Verwey on 087 2593850.
