Cobh Tidy Towns Update

tidytowns600x4001This Saturday 15 volunteers were out on a beautiful spring morning. Six bags of loose litter were picked from a housing estate at the top of Ticknock and a further nine bags from Barry’s lane on Bishop Street. The east side of town was also walked and two bags were collected.
The area known as the “Black Railings” is one of Cobh’s best vantage points and a stop on the Cobh Road Train route. It looked quite neglected and overgrown for years. For almost a year a virtual vendetta was raged by Tidy Towns volunteers against brambles, weeds, stones and accumulated litter in a very difficult area to work on. Last autumn the steep slopes were planted with a large number of shrubs, perennials and bulbs which are now starting to spring to life. Five volunteers weeded this large area while another group of volunteers cleaned the beach in Carrigaloe.

Cobh Triathlon Club are a dynamic force in our town and are also playing their part in keeping the town looking clean. On their weekly training run on Saturday mornings the athletes are now picking up any pieces of litter that they see and placing them in the nearest bin. Imagine the results if everyone out walking simply picked up one piece of litter!
