The link between exercise and positive mental health is well documented at this point and most of us would probably agree that there is a lot of merit in the Greek saying “Mens sana in corpore sano” (a healthy body in a healthy mind). However, in addition to providing excellent fitness facilities to the people of Cobh, a group of staff members from Coral Leisure Centre have gone one step further by deciding to complete Suicide First Aid Training.
The staff completed the Safe Talk programme, which is a three hour free workshop, a training programme that is internationally recognised as critical training the area of mental health. Manager of Coral Leisure Centre, Ber Rowe gave this feedback on the training “Four staff have participated in the Suicide Awareness course with Breaking the Silence Cobh. They thoroughly enjoyed the course and as an Employer I feel this course is a must for any business. I hope to have all the staff trained up before the end of the year”.
Breaking The Silence is a Cobh based voluntary group that works to help create a Suicide Safer Community by connecting the person at risk of Suicide with life preserving resources. For information on upcoming courses with Breaking The Silence please email training.breakingthesilence@gmail.com and to keep up to date with group activities you can find us on facebook by searching for ‘Breaking The Silence Cobh’.
