With the centenary of the tragedy of the sinking of the Titanic fast approaching a lot of work has been done in Cobh to commemorate the last landfall of the ill-fated ship. Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton believes that government funding should be allocated to restore the Titanic Pier in Cobh as part of the commemoration.
“Cobh Town Council has to be congratulated on putting in place a large programme of events throughout 2012. Cork County Council and Cork City Council are also providing valuable support as is Failte Ireland. Interest in the Titanic is very high, both nationally and internationally and it is expected that many will visit Cobh this year and in future years. I believe that a fully restored Titanic pier would attract even more interest.
“The Titanic Pier was the final spot where the passengers for the liner stepped from dry land onto the tenders which took them to the ship. In fact, it was from this pier that the hundreds of thousands who departed through Cobh for the New World said goodbye to Ireland. This pier is of great historical and emotional importance for the many descendants who visit Ireland each year in search of their heritage”, said Deputy Stanton.
“It is to be regretted that the Pier has been allowed to fall into such disrepair over the years that it is now in danger of collapsing and disappearing into the sea. I have asked Government Ministers to intervene and secure funding to reinstate and conserve the structure. Then the pier could become a working pier once again and would add to the heritage and maritime infrastructure of Cobh and the region.”
