Cobh Trad Sail Regatta will take place from June 28th until 30rd June 2013 in association with the Cove Sailing Club, and the Naval Service Yacht Squadron, catering for all types of craft depending on prevailing conditions each day.
2013 has been designated the year of the “Gathering” Our Regatta will embrace this idea with the schooners Irene, Soteria and Ruth from the South of England and the Spirit of Oysterhaven will be present and many more traditional sailing craft will gather under our logo; “THOSE who wander are not always LOST”
With the beautiful backdrop of the town of Cobh in the sheltered waters of Cork harbour our annual event promises to build on the spectacular showpiece that it has become. It is an event where we insist you enjoy yourself and as such we provide a varied and interesting program.
Our opening reception will be held in the Sirius Art centre, which was the former home of the Royal Cork Yacht Club. The RCYC was formed from the “Water Club” of Haulbowline (1720), the first such club in the world.
Author and Maritime specialist Darre Brunacardi will open our regatta on Friday 29th. His recent acclaimed publication of “ Haulbowline, The Naval base and Ships of Cork Harbour” provides us with a complete history of the locality.
Cobh town has such a strong maritime tradition, activities such as the Titanic Trail walk, a visit to the national park of Spike Island, a prison for the transportation of prisoners to the colonies for many years, the Cobh Heritage Centre which provides a historical tour of the story of emigration from Ireland, will provide all sailors with experiences that they rarely have time for. Indeed, with such a packed program, it will be difficult to fit in the traditional glass of orange.
