Michael Martin was awarded his PhD and conferred at University College Cork yesterday, his doctoral thesis was about civil-military relations in Ireland.
Dr Martin has already been requested to do a series of lectures for travel groups on the Queen Mary II next year and is in discussions with Berkeley University California regarding a series of lectures for their ‘summer session’ series of courses. His thesis ‘Breaking Ranks’, examined the relationship between armies in Ireland before and after the foundation of the State and in particular the emergence of representative associations in the Irish Armed Forces. Part of his research was conducted at Berkeley as a visiting scholar there in 2008-2009. Michael was joined by members of his family and many friends yesterday for the ceremony at UCC.
