Fram is the latest Hurtigtuten coastal ship designed for expedition cruising. It offers a high degree of comfort in the public areas and panorama lounges. Unlike the rest of the fleet it is not a working ship or car ferry and carries no day passengers. Fram passengers tend to be 50+ and European and some Americans. When all cabins have double occupancy, the ship provides a space ratio of 38.7 tons per passenger and a crew to passenger ratio of one for every 2.2 passengers. At full capacity the space ratio is 38.7 tons per passenger and the crew ratio is one to 2.2 passengers.
The ship is named after Fridtjof Nansen’s polar exploring ship, which was the first ship to explore the seas around Antarctica and the North Pole. The name had to be approved by the management of the Fram Museum in Oslo, Norway, who also offered to contribute authentic expedition display pieces and information on the original MS Fram.
