Cupcakes Raise nearly €500 for East Africa

Published

STEP Trainees in Cobh managed to have their cake and eat them and in the process raise nearly €500 in aid of the East Africa Famine Appeal. The young people on the YMCA training course served up tea and coffee, Cupcakes (for Kenya!) and sweets (for Somalia!) and gave people the opportunity to design their own iced treats. For those feeling less creative there were some expertly crafted cakes ready to go. The people of Cobh came to enjoy the hospitality and were very generous in their donations especially after seeing some of the heart rending images that are still emanating from East Africa.

The story may no longer be making headlines in our news but the tragedy facing the young, old and frail is very real and is likely to last well into 2012. The donation has been made to YCare International (the YMCA’s own development aid charity) who are active on the ground. General Secretary of Cobh YMCA, James Bilson said “The STEP trainees wanted to help the situation in East Africa and again, the people of Cobh have given to those in need, which in tough economic times at home is all the more amazing.” Pictured enjoying the cupcakes are Ross Tabb of Cobh (1645), the YMCA training room becomes a cafe (1652) and the creative designers of the cakes, Becky Langan and Jessica Pender (1648).
