A special presentation was made to Mr Desie McGroarty in the Naval Head Quarters on Thursday by Cmdr Fitzgerald. Mr McGroarty has worked on Haulbowline Island for fifty years and the Irish Navy wanted to show their appreciation by presenting him with a plaque.
Desie was born on Spike Island and joined Irish Steel at the age of 15 where he worked his way from apprentice electrician to foreman. Promoted then to Caretaker under Cork County Council where his job was to oversee the dismantling of the plant from 2001 until the present day.
