Dirty Secret are a unique, relatively new, Cobh based alternative traditional music band with a very loyal following. Eight friends from a wide variety of musical influences from rock, traditional and classical music formed the Band in 2010. The Band perform a very lively mixture of mostly alternative traditional music together with cover versions of songs by the Pogues, Dubliners and Steve Earle to mention just a few. The Band also play a number of their own original, Dave Barry written and arranged with Barry Walsh, songs that have become a feature of their act.
They have played in numerous venues around Cork and Cobh including:-
Musgrave Park for Munster Rugby,
The Grand Parade Cork for the Jazz Festival,
The Meeting Place in Midleton,
Cobh People’s Regatta and the Commodore Hotel in Cobh.
The Band also played a German gig in Frankfurt for Saint Patrick’s Day last year.
The CD is the bands first recording of two original songs together with one cover version of a Irish traditional song. The CD was recorded and produced by John Crone and Louise McCormick of The Manor Studio in Cobh. In fact the CD is a totally genuine Cobh product as it was written, performed and recorded in the Town. The title track “A Hair of the Dog” is a somewhat raw song about a person getting out of bed in the morning with a desperate hangover. A cure, or hair of the dog, is called for and this gradually lifts the sense of depression in this world of hypocrisy and life begins to take on a better outlook again. The lyrics were written by Dave Barry with the music written by Dave Barry and Barry Walsh. The second track “God Himself” is a historically correct song about the ill-fated Titanic that departed from Cobh, it’s last port of call one hundred years ago. The song highlights the mood and fate of the Irish that boarded Titanic in Cobh united with a sense of adventure against one of the greatest historical disasters of the time. The lyrics were written by Dave Barry and Derry Allister and again the music is written by Dave Barry and Barry Walsh. The third track is a cover version of the traditional ballad “Spancil Hill” arranged by Dave Barry and Barry Walsh.
