EMBRACE the opportunities of maritime activities to create jobs and boost tourism sector – Cllr John Mulvihill, Cork East Labour Candidate.
“Our coastline, beaches, waterfronts and harbours in Cork are world class. It’s time we began to utilise these natural resources to provide jobs for our own and incentives for others to visit,” Cllr John Mulvihill.
Department of Environment ‘red tape’ prevents the development of ideas, leaving one of our greatest resources largely untapped, according to Cllr Mulvihill – himself a former member of the Irish Naval Service.
“Foreshore licences are required for all kinds of coastline activity and these can be costly and difficult to obtain.
It’s time government departments opened up to entrepreneur’s ideas and provided support to those with the vision to create a business that will lead to job creation locally, while attracting additional tourists – its a win-win situation,” Cllr Mulvihill said.
Despite promises, the outgoing government failed to provide new maritime legislation, leaving much of our maritime resources under utilised.
“As an island inhabitant of Cobh, located on Cork Harbour at the southern tip of a country blessed with 3,500 miles of beautiful coastline – this is something I have great faith in.
The maritime opportunities are plentiful and will help the establishment of small business, with a spin off boost to employment and tourism revenue.
“Sailing schools, private boat jetties, coastline tours, hovercraft trips, fishing trips, floating restaurants, aquaculture, surfing schools – these are examples of how our most plentiful natural resource could benefit communities all over the country in terms of employment and revenue,” Cllr Mulvihill said.
