The 5th Annual Escape from Spike swim will take place on Sunday 7th of August at 10.30am. This is a one mile (distance varies due to tides and currents) open water swim from Spike Island in Cork harbour to Cobh, Co. Cork.
You should have swam in the Open water environment this year and be capable of swimming the distance before you enter. This is a Swim Ireland insured event and falls under the Open water swim committee. Please see Swim Ireland site for the calendar of events around the country. Swimmers will register before the swim and be ‘shipped’ out to the Prision island. The Prisoners will then ‘escape’ by swimming to land.
Details:
Sunday the 7th of August 10:30 park and meet up. There is limited parking outside the heritage centre but it is also the train station in Cobh so please car pool or ride the train.
11:15 Race briefing, mandatory so be there.
Post briefing, embark for the Island. As soon as all are present then the start gong will go Avoid swimming into Naval base (haulbowline) and make haste to Cobh. High water 12:01 One hour cut off for the swim from the start gong. Tea served from registration car boot. (cookies if your well behaved)
What you can do to help?
Apart from turning up and being on time, we are always short of safety cover. If you know someone with a boat or kayak, please invite them along. Since we cross the shipping channel, we need sufficient numbers of safety to go ahead. If you have a non swimming partner, we could use the odd helping hand on shore. Please bring warm clothes no matter what the weather on the day is and have swum in open water this year already.
