Wish this was on MY doorstep
My partner and I stayed in Cobh last week and on Friday, after a day’s walking, we were ready for a meal. We’d noted the restaurant as we passed around 5:15 when it seemed very quiet, but when we arrived at 6:40 it was almost full.
We were given the standard menu and the early bird menu (available till 7pm) from which we made our choice. We chose a starter and a main, my partner opting for chicken croquettes and a main of cod, while I opted for smoked salmon followed by roast pork loin. We both had a glass of the house merlot which was to our liking. My partner enjoyed her food and although the cod was perfectly well cooked, she’d wished for something a little more special. My meal was delicious and the pork was the best I’d tasted in a long while.
We saw other people’s desserts pass by, so we relented and were not disappointed. My partner’s creme brulee was very good as was my chocolate mousse (though the sugar decoration was a bit of a letdown lacking finesse.
The service was very friendly, albeit a little speedy (but then it was busy and we hadn’t booked). It was 60 euros well spent and if Gilbert’s was local to where I live, I’d be frequent visitor.

Hidden gem
Arrived in Cobh on Sunday morning 19 Sept & needed somewhere for a coffee break etc. No obvious places open so asked local taxi drivers for a recommendation. Gilberts was given & how to find it as it is tucked away from the main street.
Obviously popular & very busy. Just had coffee, hot chocolate & muffins, all good.
Washrooms etc downstairs & spotless.
Discovered that Gilberts have en-suite B&B accommodation.

Wish we had more time
Stayed in Cork this weekend but took the notion to try dinner in Cobh. First impression of the town was as to how few restaurants there seemed to be.
Anyway, we happened upon Gilberts and I have to say, it was flawless. We only had the Mains and a few drinks but the food, service and attentiveness were the best I’ve experienced in many a year. I’d love a place like that on my doorstop.

Most enjoyable
Had a meal here with my partner last March and have to say it was most enjoyable. The only unfortunate thing about the evening is that the restaurant was so quiet, us and another couple but being a Monday nite this is prob understandable. We had the early bird menu which we found to be very tasty and satisfying. Would definately recommend this restaurant.

Go here!!
Excellent restaurant, we need to see more of this kind of quality & value in Irish restaurants. Would confidently recommend Gilberts & will go back again.
