From a sporting perspective the 2013-14 school year will go down as a ‘fairytale’ one in Gaelscoil Uí Éigeartaigh, An Cóbh with the school team (mixed) bringing both football AND hurling Allianz Sciath na Scol titles triumphantly back to Cobh. For any school to win a Sciath na Scol title is a significant achievement but for a school to win two titles in the same year is truly impressive. When one considers that the school never reached a final before in its 28 year history puts the enormity of this year’s achievements into perspective. The latest chapter in this story unfolded last Wednesday (May 28 2014) in Páirc Uí Rinn in sunny weather conditions that were ideal for hurling. Leamlara N.S. provided the opposition on the day.
Gaelscoil Cobh got off to a blistering start with a goal scored by Daragh Ó hAoláin in the first minute. The subsequent exchanges were played at a quick pace and with much intensity but fortunately it was the Cobh side that kept the scoreboard ticking over. Before half-time a brace of goals was scored by Ruairí Mac Piarais who gave a fine performance throughout. Three first-half points were skilfully scored by Fionn Ó hÁinle, Tomás Ó Muirthile and Darragh Ó hAoláin bringing the score to 3-3 to no score at half time.
Criostóir Mac Domhnaill was solid throughout the game in goal. Likewise, Tomás Ó Nuanáin was like a rock in the Gaelscoil backline and outside of him Callum Ó Cuilleanáin and Adam Ó hAodha played brilliantly too. Eoghan Ó Duáin, Tomás Ó Muirthile and Ruairí Mac Piarais thundered into the game from the start and had the upper-hand in the vital middle third of the pitch for long periods. Though the second half saw fewer scoring opportunities T. Ó Muirthile managed to add a further point for the Gaelscoil and D. Ó hAoláin tagged on two more before the final whistle. Though Leamlara scored a good goal in the last quarter it proved to be too little too late for them. The Cobh forward line was on fire and looked extremely dangerous anytime the sliotar went in their direction. In the end, it was Gaelscoil Cobh that was crowned Allianz Sciath na Scol H7 champions on a final scoreline of 3-6 to 1-0.
Gaelscoil Uí Éigeartaigh would like to thank and pay tribute to all who helped in the development of this talented and special group of players. Buíochas ar leith le Múinteoir Déaglán Ó Conaill who invests a lot of time in nurturing sporting talent in the school.
Thanks also to those in Cobh GAA who provide on-going support especially Christy Kidney and Colm Damery Thanks to all ‘ idir óg agus aosta!’ who turned out on the day to support the school and helped make this occasion such a memorable one for all concerned.
Gabhaimid buíochas chomh maith lenár gcairde i Scoil Naomh Iosaef, An Cóbh as cluichí dúshlánacha a thabhairt dúinn ag amanta tráthúla agus sinn ag ullmhú do na cluichí ceannais.
Míle buíochas leis na daltaí ar fad a bhí ar an bpainéal and to their parents and families for all the support and effort put in over the years to make this group of players into a truly great team!
Gach seans nach mbeidh bhur leithéidí ann arís!!!
