tri1Warm weather, sunny skies and calm waters greeted approximately 250 triathletes and hundreds of spectators for the 2nd Annual Spike Island Jailbreak in Cobh last Sunday afternoon. Organised by Cobh Tri Club, with main sponsors Keatings Londis and the Commodore Hotel, this event is fast becoming one of the most talked about in its category.

Again this year, there were two events. A Sprint distance of 750M which began with a swim from the bridge at Whitepoint, and an Olympic distance which
saw athletes take on a swim of 1560M across the harbour from Spike, with both swims landing at the Naval Pier in Cobh’s Promenade. Once the swim had concluded, it was on to the bicycles for four laps of a 5KM course for the ‘Olympic’ entrants and two laps for the ‘Sprint’ contestants.

After athletes had finished the cycle course then came a run of the 2.5KM course which saw the ‘Olympic’ athletes having to do four laps and the ‘Sprinters’ do two laps. Overall winner this year was Joyce Wolfe who finished the Olympic course in a time of 02:14:55. In second place was William Kaye in a time of 02:18:27 followed by Jordi MILLASTRE COSTA in third on 02:19:05.

This event was organised with total professionalism. Transition areas were perfectly organised and clearly marked out which was evident as athletes kept up momentum at change-over points with ease. Facilities were plentiful around the area and after-event showers were provided by Coral Leisure for a donation of €2 to a local charity.

Cobh can certainly boast some great events and this is just another to add to the calendar!!
